When Fashion Meets Engineering: What I'm Learning as a PhD Researcher

Part 6 of The PhD Journal.

When I began my PhD, I thought the biggest challenge would be learning new technology.

I was wrong.

The biggest challenge has been learning to think differently.

For most of my career, I've approached every project as a fashion designer. My instinct has always been to think about the wearer first. How does a garment move? How does it feel? Will someone genuinely enjoy wearing it?

Those questions haven't disappeared.

But they've been joined by a completely new set of questions that I never imagined asking.

Could this material carry an electrical signal?

How would repeated movement affect its performance?

What happens after washing?

Where should a sensor sit to collect reliable information without compromising comfort?

Some days it feels as though I'm learning an entirely new language.

Words like impedance, encapsulation and microcontrollers have become part of my everyday vocabulary, alongside pattern cutting, seam construction and fabric selection.

At first, that felt overwhelming; There were moments when I felt completely out of my depth. Stepping into an engineering laboratory as a fashion designer was a huge change, but it also reminded me that every researcher starts somewhere. It's a very different environment from a fashion studio, and stepping into an unfamiliar discipline can be intimidating.

Over time, though, something unexpected happened.

I stopped seeing fashion and engineering as two separate worlds.

Instead, I began to see how much they need one another.

An engineer might design an incredible sensing system, but if it's uncomfortable, difficult to wear or doesn't fit naturally into everyday life, people are unlikely to use it.

Equally, a beautifully designed garment can't become a piece of wearable technology without understanding how electronic components, sensors and textiles can work together.

The most exciting conversations often happen where those two perspectives meet.

I've realised that my role isn't to become the best engineer in the room.

It's to bring a designer's way of thinking into engineering discussions, while learning enough engineering to ask better questions and make more informed design decisions.

That's what interdisciplinary research feels like to me.

It's less about becoming an expert in everything, and more about learning how different disciplines can solve problems together.

Every week I discover something I didn't know before.

Sometimes it's a new piece of equipment.

Sometimes it's a research paper that changes the way I think.

Sometimes it's simply realising that an idea I thought would work… doesn't.

Oddly enough, those moments have become some of the most valuable.

They're reminders that research isn't about getting everything right the first time.

It's about being curious enough to keep asking questions.

Looking back, I don't think my PhD has changed who I am as a designer.

If anything, it's strengthened the belief that good wearable technology has to begin with people.

The engineering matters enormously.

But so do comfort, movement, aesthetics and the everyday experience of wearing a garment.

The most successful smart textiles of the future won't just be technically impressive.

They'll feel so natural that we almost forget the technology is there.

That's the future I'm hoping to contribute to, one question at a time.
