A Good Day in the Lab Isn't Always the One You Planned
Part 7 of The PhD Journal.
When people imagine research, they often picture a breakthrough.
A graph that suddenly makes sense.
An experiment that works perfectly.
A moment where everything falls into place.
Those moments do happen, but they're surprisingly rare.
The reality of research is much quieter.
Most days are spent preparing samples, setting up equipment, reading papers, documenting observations and asking questions that often lead to even more questions.
I've come to realise that a successful day in the lab isn't always the one where everything goes exactly as planned.
Sometimes it's the day that teaches you something unexpected.
Learning to slow down
Before starting my PhD, I was used to working in the fast-paced world of fashion.
Design decisions often had to be made quickly, collections worked to fixed deadlines, and there was always another project waiting around the corner.
Research has encouraged me to work differently.
It has taught me the value of slowing down.
Taking detailed notes.
Repeating measurements.
Checking assumptions.
Recording the small details that might seem insignificant today but could become incredibly important weeks or even months later.
At first, that felt frustrating.
Now, I see it as one of the most valuable skills I'm developing.
Every question leads to another
One of the biggest surprises has been discovering that answering one question usually creates several more.
That's not a sign that something has gone wrong.
It's often a sign that you're beginning to understand the problem more deeply.
The further I progress, the more I appreciate that research isn't about finding quick answers.
It's about asking better questions.
Each experiment, conversation and paper adds another piece to a much larger puzzle.
Some pieces fit immediately.
Others sit on the table for weeks before they finally make sense.
The importance of keeping records
One habit I've developed during my PhD is keeping a detailed laboratory notebook.
At first, it felt like another task on an already long to-do list.
Now I wouldn't work without it.
Research isn't just about the results you achieve.
It's about understanding how you arrived there.
Writing things down forces me to slow my thinking, reflect on decisions and create a record that I can return to later.
More than once, I've looked back through previous notes and realised that something which seemed unimportant at the time had become incredibly useful later on.
Progress isn't always visible
One of the hardest things about research is that progress can feel invisible.
There are days when it seems as though you've spent hours working without anything obvious to show for it.
But research rarely moves forward in dramatic leaps.
It moves forward through hundreds of small, careful steps.
A question clarified.
A process improved.
A better understanding of what doesn't work.
Those moments might never make headlines, but they're the foundation that every meaningful discovery is built upon.
Looking back
When I think about the most rewarding days I've had during my PhD so far, they aren't necessarily the days when everything worked perfectly.
They're the days when I left the lab understanding something I hadn't understood that morning.
Sometimes that understanding comes from success.
Sometimes it comes from discovering that an idea doesn't work the way I expected.
Either way, it's still progress.
I've realised that a good day in the lab isn't measured by whether every experiment goes to plan.
It's measured by whether I leave with a little more knowledge, a little more curiosity and a few better questions than I had when I arrived.
And I think that's what research is really about.
