Are Smart Garments Sustainable?

Wearable technology promises innovation, but it also introduces tension.

Electronics contribute to material complexity.
Garments are already part of a system struggling with overproduction and waste.

Bringing the two together demands careful consideration.

If emotional-support garments are to exist ethically, they must address:

  • Longevity

  • Repairability

  • Modularity

  • End-of-life strategy

Can electronic components be separated?
Can systems be upgraded without discarding the garment?
Can materials be responsibly sourced?
Does preventative wellbeing justify material complexity?

There is also a deeper sustainability question.

If a garment meaningfully supports emotional awareness, could it increase attachment?
Could emotional durability extend product lifespan?

Sustainability is not only about material composition. It is about relationship.

This research must balance innovation with responsibility. Otherwise, it risks contributing to the very systems it hopes to improve.
